Professor John Mullan gives his ideal order for reading Jane Austen novels?

Like Professor Mullan, I agree that Pride & Prejudice is the gateway Austen novel. While Emma will forever be my favorite, it is Austen’s longest and most challenging work, & I know Emma isn’t the most likable heroine.

So if anyone new to Austen’s work ever asks me which novel they should start with, I’ll always reply, “It is a truth universally acknowledged that one’s first Austen novel must be Pride & Prejudice.”
